Step One
Gather birch (or other) smaller logs and get them drying. Once the small logs are dry, set up your band saw with a guard and cut each piece into the same thickness. Or you can purchase wooden discs already cut from a craft store. Hobby Lobby has them in their wood crafting section in a small bag. Or they may have them in the Christmas area too (on sale).
Step Two
Drill two small holes into the top of each piece. Choose a drill bit that is only slightly larger than your string to keep the string secure on each piece of garland to avoid it moving once the garland is hung.
Step Three
This is where you will decide which side of each disc is the one you want facing out and also which pieces look nice together. Once you have the wood discs all laid out, use tape or glue to hold the end of the string together and feed the string through each piece of garland. Be sure to allow enough string so that you still hang it when you are done.
Step Four
The last step is to add your lettering. I chose to stamp the letters on each disc to avoid having to write it but you can write the letters on as well with a paint pen or marker.
Step Five
You can store these in a ziplock bag to avoid the string getting tangled in storage.
So there you have it! Super fun and festive birch log garland that makes a big statement!! They are great for adding rustic charm to your home decor! They can be used for Christmas (as shown here) or use them with different letters for all sorts of events throughout the year!
